What Is the Google Dinosaur's Name? Meet the Lonely T-Rex
Millions of people have played with it; almost nobody knows what to call it. So: the dinosaur in the Google dinosaur game does have a name — it's the Lonely T-Rex.
Where "Lonely T-Rex" comes from
The nickname traces back to the Chrome team itself and stuck through years of interviews and articles about the game. It fits perfectly: the little dinosaur waits alone on the "No internet" page, then runs through an empty desert where the only company is cacti and the occasional pterodactyl. Lonely is the job description.
The species: a Tyrannosaurus rex
The sprite is a stylized T-Rex — chosen deliberately. The designers wanted a joke about going "prehistoric" when your connection dies, and no dinosaur says prehistoric like the king of the Cretaceous. Even the project's internal codename honored it: Project Bolan, after Marc Bolan of the rock band T. Rex. The full story is in the origins of the dinosaur game.
Names players use
- The Lonely T-Rex — the semi-official name.
- Chrome Dino / Dino — what Google's own pages tend to call the game today.
- Steve — a fan nickname that spread through forums and merch; unofficial, but you'll meet it online.
- The no-internet dinosaur — the descriptive name everyone understands, covered in our no internet game post.
Does the name matter in the game?
Nothing in the game refers to the dino by name — no intro, no dialogue, just running. But a named character is easier to root for, and the Lonely T-Rex has become a genuine mascot: it appears in Chrome's error pages, birthday easter eggs and Google merchandise. Not bad for a creature with two frames of running animation.
