Google Dinosaur Game Easter Eggs and Secrets

The dinosaur game is itself an easter egg — a game hidden in an error page — but the rabbit hole goes deeper. Here are the secrets tucked inside the secret.

The birthday cake

For Chrome's 10th birthday in September 2018, the runner briefly gained a party mode: a birthday cake appeared on the track, and grabbing it put a party hat on the T-Rex for the rest of the run. The birthday build still circulates in Chromium history — the sweetest obstacle the desert ever had.

Night mode

Around 700 points the sky flips dark — stars out, colors inverted in the classic version. Many players never survive long enough to see it, which makes it a de facto easter egg. Our Night Dino turns that rare moment into a whole game.

The score rollover

At 99,999 the counter silently resets to zero and keeps going — the game's quiet joke about infinity, explored in does the dinosaur game end?

Address-bar secrets

Jokes in the code and design

The project's codename was Project Bolan (after T. Rex's frontman), the dino is nicknamed the Lonely T-Rex, and the whole game was tuned to last ~17 million years — the span of T-Rex's extinction. Full lore in the origins post. The console will even let you rewrite physics, which we document in the hacks guide.

Beyond the dino

Google hides games all over — snake in Search, Pac-Man in the Doodle archive, a dozen more in our tour of hidden Google games. And the biggest "easter egg" of all: you can simply play the dinosaur game online, no broken WiFi required.
